Description

Hells Canyon is the deepest river gorge in America, with the rugged peaks of the Seven Devil and Wallowa Mountains rising well over a mile above the rushing Snake River below. The river creates thrilling Class III and IV rapids as it loses the last of its mountain altitude during the early stretches, then settles down a little as it continues through this striking gorge.

Once the river slows down, it’s easier to appreciate the federally protected landscape here. Basalt and granite cliffs stretch up from the riverbed on both sides. Wildlife such as deer, elk, mountain goats, and bighorn sheep can often be seen, and the river itself is home to smallmouth bass and rainbow trout. Hundreds of pieces of ancient rock art left by the Nez Perce Indians can be seen throughout the Hell’s Canyon area, demonstrating that this place has been impressing people for thousands of years.

Depending on which sections of the gorge are rafted, trips can last from 1 to 3 days. Powerboat trips up the river from Lewiston are a popular alternative for visitors at the north end of the gorge.
