Description

The South Fork of the Payette descends from the mountainous areas of central Idaho, creating persistant intermediate level rapids as it loses elevation. There are three main sections of the South Fork that are typically run. Farthest upstream is the Grandjean Run, followed by South Fork Canyon and then the Staircase section.

The rapids here are thrilling and consistent: the river drops almost 40 feet a mile after it passes Lowman. The Staircase section contains miles of nonstop whitewater, while in the Canyon, boats must be portaged around the impressive Big Falls. Any of these runs are exciting by themselves, but when combined together they make for an intense three days of swift currents and rushing water.
