Glacier NP - Orientation

Getting Around, Basic Info,...

Below you will find helpful information about Glacier NP.

Overview

Glacier National Park has several roads that penetrate its core, though the Going to the Sun Road is only one that completely bisects it. Open typically from early June-mid October, the 52 mile long Going to the Sun Road can be accessed by West Glacier on the West side and by St. Mary on the East side. The 'Sun Road' is a remarkable feat of early 20th century engineering, literally blasted out the rock walls of the Continental Divide and is at times barely 20 feet wide (FYI, vehicles over 21 feet long and/or wider than 8 feet are permanently banned from the central section of the Going to the Sun road for safety reasons). For the less vertically inclined visitor, Rt. 2 offers a different, and many times faster, option for east-west travel, its route tracing the eastern and southern borders of the park. Additional park access points include from the East, Many Glacier, renowned for Grizzly sightings & East Glacier, which is part of the Blackfoot Indian Reservation; from the South, Walton, which accesses the Cole Creek/Nayak leave no trace wilderness region of the park; and from the West, the Camas Road, a terrific stretch for evening wildlife spotting & Polebridge, a charming & remote mountain town which serves as the gateway to the impressive Livingston Range. There are supermarkets, restaurants & accommodations at all major entrances to the park and within the park there are many food & lodging options, from primitive camping and burger-joint fare to luxury accommodations and fine dining. The closest airport to the park is Glacier Park International (GPI) located in Kalispell, only 25 miles from West Glacier, and plays host to a slew of national carriers and car rental companies.
